Lent

What is Lent?
Lent is the Christian season of preparation before Easter. In Western Christianity, Ash Wednesday marks the first day, or the start of the season of Lent, which begins 4- days prior to Easter (Sundays are not included in the count).

Lent is a time when many Christians prepare for Easter by observing a period of fasting, repentance, moderation and spiritual discipline. The purpose is to set aside time for reflection on Jesus Christ - His suffering and his sacrifice, his life, death, burial and resurrection.

Many people I know often give up chocolate for Lent as most people enjoy this luxury as well as building up the excitement to enjoying many chocolate eggs at Easter - almost a reward for this sacrifice. But as time and luxuries have progressed, many fasting and sacrifice ideas have emerged: chocolate, sugar, carbs, smoking, alcohol, social media, swearing, coffee and shopping or spending.

Many people also take this time to rather do more good for 40 days - acts of kindness, pay it forwards, small friendly gestures or even 40 days of prayer.

Whatever the choice, I think 40 days of a certain sacrifice is a test for any individual and a small reminder of what our Lord did for us. I have chosen to give up Coca-Cola - I really enjoy this sugary soda and I drink more than I should. I look forward to not only the benefits of not having this drink in my body (too much sugar, bad for your teeth and health) but also to be proud of myself for making a small sacrifice.

What are you giving up for Lent?

  1. I think that one thing that I'm going to try to do for lent is to read my bible every day. I'm ashamed to say that I haven't been to church lately so I feel like this is a good time to build my relationship with God. I also have another personal goal with something that I have been struggling with and obsessing over so I'm going to try to give that up as well. I typically give up icecream or chocolate or gossip magazines, but I think that these things will be more challenging for me this year as they are more personal.
